The Ellison TBI is a very popular fuel metering system among operators of experimental aircraft worldwide. They work well on the Tigre, and provide a nice way to get an inverted fuel system on a Lycoming since the TBI has no float chamber. Several Siemens Sh14 owners use the TBI successfully too.

The Ellison company is no longer run by its founder Ben Ellison and has been sold to Steve Glover in California. Steve can provide certain maintenance services, and before too long expects to be able to restart production. For the time being, however, you cannot buy a new Ellison TBI.

This led John Hickman and the team in San Diego to wonder about alternatives:

"Several of us in the San Diego area have been exploring the situation in great detail. We have dissected an Ellison EFS 4-5 to analyze how it works and what parts would be needed to overhaul/repair a defective unit and if it could be done locally by owner. We also purchased 2 Rotec units from Australia and installed them for evaluation and for suitability as a replacement for the Ellison. My friend and colleague at the local A&P school, Mr. Wheeler North, has taken the time to write up our findings and conclusions. Wheeler is a very brilliant and talented RV builder that has taken the lead on this project. Wheeler probably knows more about the Ellison outside of Ben Ellison and Steve Glover."

A big thank you to John and to Wheeler North for sharing this valuable information.
